The Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the nation's top research universities and ranks consistently in U.S. News & World Reports top ten public universities in
the United States for both undergraduate and graduate programs. The College of Engineering, the largest engineering program in the country, is the only U.S. engineering college with all its ranked programs in the top ten of their specialty areas. In 2007, research comprised 40% of Georgia Tech expenditures and totaled over $370 million.
All of Georgia Tech's eight schools that offer an undergraduate program are ranked in the top ten nationwide. Among public institutions, Georgia Tech has the highest percentage of undergraduate National Merit and Achievement Scholars. In 2007, over 1600 bachelor's degrees were awarded in engineering and sciences
The College of Engineering is ranked 4th overall for graduate schools and nine of the eleven graduate programs in the College of Engineering are ranked in the top ten. The biomedical/bioengineering graduate program is currently ranked 2nd in the nation. In 2007, over 400 doctoral degrees were awarded in engineering and sciences.

Georgia Tech's College of Engineering grants the largest number of engineering degrees in the nation and is also one of the top producers of black, female and Hispanic engineering graduates.

Student Highlights
Two Georgia Tech students are the recipients of the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year. Awarded for academic merit, the Goldwater is the premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering. The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The winners, Inn Inn Chen and Yixao Zou, are both students in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University (BME).
